The Department of Economics was a part of the Department of History, Economics was introduced as an allied subject for B.A History students in the year 1979. The Economics major was established in June 1982. The sanctioned strength of the students was 100 (TM 50 +EM50) permanent affiliation for the department was granted in the year 1999.

The post graduate course (M.A Economics) was started in September 2013. The sanctioned strength of the students was 20. M.Phil and Research Work started from the year 2017 with the Ref. No.24743/D5/2016-31.10.17 and the Ph.D. Ref. No. 24742/D5/2016-02.11.17.

The department comprises of talented teachers, it has three regular faculty members . One Associate Professor and Two Assistant Professor, Three Government Guest Lecturers and Two PTA Guest Lecturers. Two regular staff members have cleared SLET and two staff members has received the Ph.D degree from Bharathidasan university. Three Government guest lecturers also cleared SET exam and two of them received Ph.D. Degree from Bharathidasan University and currently four staff members pursuing their Ph.D research work. During the academic year 2020 – 2021, 337 students have enrolled in B.A Economics and 48 students have enrolled in M. A. Economics 3 students in M.Phil Economics.

We are maintaining the students with excellent academic performance and discipline.Under the autonomous setup with its own Board of Studies the Department has been periodically revising and updating syllabus for B.A, M.A and M.Phil Economics. The vision of the department is to offer quality education to the marginalized under privileged students extension activities are the essential part of the academic activity of the Department. The department has been approved as the research department for July 2017 Onwards It will promote Entrepreneurship training. Skill up gradation and motivate the students for self employment and empowerment.
